Organic Baby Clothes - What Do I Need to Know?

Organic baby clothes have evolved into more than plain basic items into products with style and flair. If you are like many parents today, you want only the safest material to touch your baby's skin. So, what do you look for to ensure the hip little bodysuit is actually organic and not an imposter?

First, look for 100% organic cotton or certified organic cotton. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. A textile product carrying the GOTS label grade 'organic' must contain a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers whereas a product with the label grade 'made with organic' must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibers. Why is this important? According to the Organic Trade Association, conventionally grown cotton accounts for up to 10% of the world's pesticides and 25% of all insecticides used to grow crops. The pesticides used, cyanide, dicofol, naled, propargite and trifluralin, are all known to cause cancer, and have been classified by the US Environmental Protection Agency as the most dangerous pesticides. By purchasing organic cotton, you will do well knowing the cotton is grown with GMO free seeds and no damaging insecticides or herbicides.

What about bamboo? Bamboo is considered a natural, sustainable, and plant based fiber. Bamboo also has antibacterial properties which make it an appealing alternative to other fibers. While bamboo the plant is a great sustainable resource, bamboo the fiber is a little more questionable. The conversation process from plant to yarn is either mechanical or chemical. Mechanical manufacturing changes bamboo's form to a linen bamboo, but tends to be very costly. The chemical manufacturing process yields bamboo rayon which is generally found in clothing. It is the chemical manufacturing process that still needs work to be a viable alternative to organic cotton.
